Frequently Asked Questions
Before Your Visit
Loose, comfortable clothing is best. Depending on your treatment, we may need access to areas below the elbows and knees, as well as the abdomen or back. Please avoid tight-fitting clothing, jeans, or restrictive sports bras. Drapes are always available if you prefer or need to change during your session.
Eat a light meal within a few hours of your visit, stay hydrated with room temp/warm water, and avoid arriving overly hungry or rushed.
If it’s your first appointment, complete your Health History, Consent forms, and account set-up at least 24 hours in advance of your appointment. This gives us enough time to review and plan to receive you the day of your appointment. These forms are in Jane and need to be completed online.
Plan to arrive a few minutes early to allow for street parking, finding your way, and to arrive without the stress of rushing.
No. Acupuncture does not require belief to be effective. What matters most is consistency and receiving care in alignment with the treatment plan outlined by your provider.
Its benefits have been observed across diverse populations, including adults, children, and even animals. Used for centuries within East Asian Medicine and increasingly studied in modern biomedical research, acupuncture supports the body’s natural regulatory and healing processes.
When care is consistent, collaborative, and integrated with appropriate lifestyle adjustments, results are often more meaningful and sustainable.
During Treatment
Most people are surprised by how gentle acupuncture feels. The needles are extremely thin, about the width of a hair, and placed with care and precision.
You may feel a brief sensation, warmth, heaviness, or gentle movement. Many people find treatments deeply calming, and some even fall asleep. If anything feels uncomfortable, we work together and adjustments are made.
Acupuncture supports the body’s natural ability to regulate and heal. From an East Asian Medicine lens, acupuncture restores balance within the body, physically, emotionally, and energetically, supporting resilience and adaptability over time. From a biomedical perspective, it helps modulate the nervous system, improve circulation, reduce inflammation, and support hormonal and immune balance..
Acupuncture is very safe when provided by a licensed Acupuncturist. At Blue Heron Vitality, your provider(s) are NCBAHM certified, licensed, and certified in clean needle technique.
Side effects are typically mild and temporary and may include slight soreness, minor bruising, or feeling relaxed or tired after treatment.
When prescribed by a licensed, trained herbalist, herbal medicine is generally safe and well tolerated. Herbal formulas are a form of personalized medicine — carefully selected and adjusted based on your individual presentation, health history, and evolving needs.
Chinese herbal medicine has been used for centuries with extensive documented clinical application. Today, a growing body of modern research continues to examine and support many of the principles and formulas that have long been practiced within East Asian Medicine.
The products prescribed are sourced from reputable manufacturers that follow Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), with rigorous quality control testing for purity and safety.
Because health presentations change over time, herbal formulations require regular evaluation and refinement. Herbs can interact not only with prescription medications, but also with other herbs and nutritional supplements. For this reason, professional guidance and open communication are essential to ensure safety, effectiveness, and alignment with your overall care plan.
Care & Results
East Asian Medicine (EAM) is a comprehensive medical system with thousands of years of documented clinical history. It represents lineages and traditions that developed across China, Japan, Korea, and other regions of East Asia.
While often referred to as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), modern practice draws from multiple classical and regional traditions. EAM encompasses acupuncture, herbal medicine, nutrition, moxibustion, cupping, bloodletting, bodywork such as Tui Na, lifestyle alignment with nature and constitution, and internal arts such as Qi Gong.
East Asian Medicine views health through patterns of relationship and function, addressing underlying imbalances and their outward manifestations in a personalized and integrative way.
Acupuncture and East Asian Medicine support a wide range of physical, emotional, and systemic concerns. Rooted in a medical system that has served as primary care for thousands of years, this medicine offers a comprehensive framework for understanding health and restoring balance.
Rather than focusing solely on symptoms, this approach addresses underlying patterns that contribute to imbalance and how those imbalances express themselves in the body. Care may be used on its own or alongside conventional medicine, depending on your needs and goals.
Examples of what may be supported include, but are not limited to:
Pain & Musculoskeletal Health
Joint pain (back, knee, elbow, etc.), arthritis, sciatica

If you don’t see your specific concern listed, I encourage you to reach out. East Asian Medicine offers a broad and nuanced approach to care, and a brief conversation can help determine whether this medicine is a good fit for you.
This is highly individualized and depends on the nature of your concern, how long it has been present, and the general status of your health. At your Initial Evaluation, we’ll discuss a collaborative treatment plan and reassess as your body responds. Our goal is always effective, intentional, and sustainable care.
Some people notice changes after one or two sessions, while others experience more gradual improvement. Acute concerns often respond more quickly than long-standing (chronic) patterns.
Consistency matters: regular care supports deeper, longer-lasting change and relief.
Herbal medicine is a time-tested, evidence-informed modality that supports the body’s innate capacity to regulate, restore, and adapt. In acute situations…such as the first signs of a cold, mild digestive upset, or temporary sleep disruption; herbal formulas can be used to help strengthen resilience and promote a steadier return to balance. Herbal medicine also offers meaningful support for chronic and complex presentations, especially when symptoms are layered, recurring, or influenced by stress, hormonal shifts, inflammation, or long-standing depletion.
Rather than targeting isolated symptoms, herbal medicine takes a multi-pronged, systems-based approach. Formulas are designed to address interconnected patterns; supporting digestion, circulation, immune function, and nervous system regulation in parallel. What may appear unrelated through a conventional lens (for example, fatigue alongside skin changes or mood fluctuations) is often understood within traditional and energetic frameworks as part of a shared underlying pattern, guiding a more coherent and personalized strategy.
Herbal medicine can be used internally and externally, and is most effective when guided by a licensed, trained herbalist who tailors and refines formulas as the body changes. Thoughtfully prescribed, it remains a legitimate and valuable component of modern integrative primary care.
